Lizette Acero, 19, of Pinon Hills, died October 3 after the car she was riding in crashed into a tree on Bear Valley Road in Victorville. Two others were hospitalized.

Victorville, CA (October 3, 2026) - A 19-year-old Pinon Hills woman died after the car she was riding in crashed into a tree on Bear Valley Road in Victorville late Saturday night, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.
Lizette Acero was a front-seat passenger in a white 2017 Hyundai Elantra that was traveling westbound on Bear Valley Road when it left the roadway and struck a tree on the north side of the street near Stonegate Drive, officials said. The crash was reported at about 11:32 p.m.
Acero suffered serious injuries and was transported by ambulance to St. Mary Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead, according to the San Bernardino County Coroner's office. The 22-year-old woman who was driving the Elantra and a third passenger riding in the back seat were also taken to local hospitals for treatment. Officials did not disclose the extent of their injuries.
Both the driver and the surviving passenger cooperated with investigators, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department. Victorville's Major Accident Investigation Team responded to the scene and is leading the investigation.
The circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.
When a single-vehicle crash kills or injures a passenger in California, the fact that there is only one car involved does not end the legal analysis. A passenger has rights independent of the driver, and California law gives that passenger a path to recover for their losses.
For the Acero family, wrongful death and survival claims are available in addition to the claims of the injured passengers. An attorney familiar with single-vehicle crash cases in California can help the family understand what the investigation findings mean for each potential claim.
Many families reach out after a crash like this one unsure whether they have a claim when there was only one vehicle involved, or when the driver was someone they knew. The answer in California is often yes — a passenger's right to compensation does not depend on the nature of their relationship with the driver.
