Van Nuys, California (July 11, 2026) - A 38-year-old woman died early Saturday morning after a pickup truck struck her in Van Nuys and fled the scene, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The crash happened at about 12:50 a.m. on July 11, 2026, in the area of Sepulveda Boulevard and Wyandotte Street, LAPD said. A gray pickup truck was traveling north on Sepulveda Boulevard when it struck the woman, who was walking eastbound in an unmarked crosswalk.

The truck kept going north on Sepulveda without stopping. Paramedics arrived and pronounced the woman dead at the scene.

LAPD's Valley Traffic Division is asking anyone with information to call 818-644-8024 or 877-527-3247 during non-business hours and weekends. Tips can also go to Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477 or lacrimestoppers.org.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

A driver who flees after hitting someone on foot leaves a family with no answers and a case that only gets harder to prove with time. What happens in the next few weeks often decides whether the person responsible is ever identified.

Fatal Hit-and-Run in Van Nuys, California

Even when the driver who caused a fatal crash hasn't been identified, the victim's family isn't without options.

  • Who may be found liable: the driver, once identified through witness accounts, surveillance footage, or vehicle debris, and potentially a vehicle owner who isn't the driver
  • What investigators and attorneys examine: nearby traffic and business camera footage, paint transfer or debris at the scene, and tip-line leads from LAPD's public appeal
  • Uninsured motorist coverage: even when the at-fault driver hasn't been identified, a claim may be available under the victim's own uninsured motorist coverage
  • Comparative fault: California follows a pure comparative fault standard. Even if the driver's insurer argues the crossing location affected fault, the family can still recover compensation reduced by any percentage attributed to her

Wrongful death claims in California generally must be filed within two years of the date of death (CCP 377.60). For this crash, that deadline is July 11, 2028.
