Sun Valley, CA (October 14, 2026) - One person was killed and another was hospitalized after a pickup truck and a big rig collided on the northbound 5 Freeway near Sheldon Street, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash was reported around 11 a.m. on October 14. The Los Angeles Fire Department said a man was pronounced dead at the scene and a second person was taken to a hospital. The man who died was a driver and has not been publicly identified. Another driver was hospitalized with minor injuries.

Aerial video from the scene showed a white pickup truck with severe front-end damage stopped behind the big rig, partially wedged beneath its rear. A cause was not given in initial reports.

Lanes on the northbound 5 were closed during the response, and traffic was diverted off the freeway at Sheldon Street. The backup stretched for miles.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

When a Big Rig Is Involved in a Fatal Crash in California

NHTSA’s Traffic Safety Facts report that 5,472 people died in crashes involving large trucks across the United States in 2023, and about 70 percent of them were occupants of other vehicles. Early reports on the Sun Valley crash do not say what caused it, so how it happened will depend on the evidence investigators collect.

After a death, California law lets certain family members file a wrongful death claim, and the estate can bring a separate survival claim for what the person lost before dying. A collision with a big rig can involve more than one insurance policy and more than one responsible party, which is why early evidence matters.

  • First steps: Ask the CHP for the crash report number and the investigating unit’s contact, ask that both vehicles not be released or salvaged yet, and send every insurer call to one person.
  • Who may be responsible: Depending on what investigators find, either driver, the company that operated the big rig if it was a commercial carrier, a cargo loader, or a maintenance contractor. Hours-of-service logs and the truck’s electronic data recorder can show what each vehicle was doing before impact.
  • Deadline: California allows two years to file a personal injury or wrongful death claim (CCP 335.1), which puts the deadline at October 14, 2028 for a crash and death on October 14, 2026. California’s pure comparative fault rule means a claim can proceed even if a driver is found partly at fault.
