South Los Angeles, CA (October 30, 2026) - The California Highway Patrol responded to a crash on the eastbound 105 Freeway near the 110 Freeway.

The crash happened in the late morning of October 30. Darryl "DMC" McDaniels, a founding member of the hip-hop group Run-DMC, was in the black SUV involved in the collision.

Video of the aftermath shared online showed the SUV pointing in the opposite direction of traffic, with shattered glass inside the vehicle. The right side of the SUV sustained heavy damage. The video and reports from the scene indicate the SUV collided with a blue garbage truck.

CHP officers who responded found McDaniels, who complained of minor pain. A representative for McDaniels said the other passengers in the SUV were okay. There were no reports of any serious injuries.

It is not yet clear what caused the crash.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

Your Legal Questions After a Garbage Truck Crash in South Los Angeles, CA

NHTSA reported 391 deaths in California crashes involving large trucks in 2024. A garbage truck may belong to a private hauler or a public agency, and that difference changes the deadline.

Who can be held responsible in a garbage truck crash?

Responsibility may rest with the truck's driver, the company or agency that employs the driver, or whoever maintained the truck. The evidence decides which apply.

Can I recover if the CHP has not said who caused the crash?

Yes, a claim can move forward while the investigation is open. Video, vehicle data, and witness accounts can show who caused the crash.

What if I was partly at fault?

California uses pure comparative fault. You can recover even if you share blame, though your award drops by your percentage of fault.

What should I do first after a truck crash?

Get checked the same day and request the CHP report number. Photograph the vehicles, keep every medical record, and decline a recorded statement to the other insurer.

How long do I have to file a claim in California?

Personal injury claims must generally be filed within two years of the crash (CCP 335.1), which makes the deadline October 30, 2028. If the truck belongs to a public agency, the claim has a six-month deadline of April 30, 2027.
