outh Los Angeles, CA (October 24, 2026) - In the Broadway-Manchester neighborhood, a sedan struck a 66-year-old pedestrian who later died, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

LAPD identified the pedestrian as Bruce Frederick Buchanan Jr., who died at a hospital. The crash happened shortly before 4 p.m. on October 24, near an Arco gas station at West Manchester Avenue and South Broadway.

Police said a grey sedan was turning out of the gas station when it collided with a pedestrian who had fallen into the roadway. The driver continued on and returned after bystanders flagged him down. He stayed while the Los Angeles Fire Department responded and for about 20 minutes after the pedestrian was taken away.

Police said the driver left before officers arrived and did not provide his information, as required by law. Authorities have not released more details about the driver or the vehicle.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

What to Do After a Pedestrian Hit-and-Run in South Los Angeles, CA

NHTSA reported 7,080 pedestrian deaths in U.S. traffic crashes in 2024, and 24 percent of those pedestrians were struck by a hit-and-run driver. The California Office of Traffic Safety counted 1,106 pedestrian deaths statewide in 2023.

  1. Ask LAPD for the crash report number, and keep the clothing and belongings the pedestrian had on. They can be evidence.
  2. Find video before it is overwritten. Gas stations, nearby stores, buses, and doorbell cameras may have recorded the corner, and footage is often erased quickly.
  3. Call the victim's insurer early. Uninsured motorist coverage on a household auto policy may apply when a driver cannot be found or has no insurance. Do not give a recorded statement to another insurer.
  4. Know the driver's duties. California Vehicle Code sections 20001 and 20003 require a driver in an injury crash to stop, share identifying information, and give reasonable aid. Police said this driver left before officers arrived.
  5. Mind the deadline and fault rules. Eligible family members can bring a wrongful death claim (Code of Civil Procedure 377.60) within two years of the death (Code of Civil Procedure 335.1). For a death on October 24, 2026, that deadline is October 24, 2028. LAPD said the pedestrian had fallen into the roadway. California's pure comparative fault rule reduces a recovery by any share of fault but never bars it.
