A man riding an electric scooter died on Broadway in South Los Angeles after two drivers struck him and fled on October 9, 2026. LAPD is investigating.

South Los Angeles, CA (October 9, 2026) - The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating a fatal hit-and-run on Broadway in the Florence neighborhood of South Los Angeles after a man riding an electric scooter was struck by two drivers who both fled the scene without stopping on Friday night.
The incident was reported just before 10 p.m. on Broadway near 85th Street, according to the LAPD. Police said an approximately 35-year-old man was in the crosswalk at 85th Street when a car traveling north on Broadway struck him and dragged him approximately 700 feet from underneath. A second car then struck the man and dragged him approximately 200 more feet, coming to the area of 83rd Street, the LAPD said.
The man died at the scene, officials confirmed.
LAPD said the drivers of both vehicles left without stopping. Investigators are searching for a black vehicle, possibly a sedan, with damage to the front end. A description of the second vehicle has not been released.
Anyone with information about either vehicle can contact the LAPD. The investigation is ongoing.
This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.
The California Office of Traffic Safety reported 1,106 pedestrian deaths on California roads in 2023, a 56 percent increase from 2014. Electric scooter riders in crosswalks carry the same legal vulnerability as pedestrians, and hit-and-run crashes add a layer of complexity that families must address quickly.
What happens when a hit-and-run driver is never found? California requires auto insurers to include uninsured motorist coverage in every policy. When a driver flees and is never identified, UM pays for the victim’s injuries and death, up to the policy limits, provided that physical contact was made and a police report was filed. In this crash, both conditions are met. Families and insurers handling UM claims require a copy of the LAPD report and prompt notice of the claim, typically within 30 days.
If either driver is identified, the family can pursue a separate civil wrongful death claim against that driver and any vehicle owner whose negligence contributed to the crash. Both drivers who fled can face separate civil liability for each act of striking and dragging the victim. A criminal conviction or guilty plea is not required before a civil case proceeds.
Preserve evidence now. If the e-scooter or the rider’s clothing has not been taken into evidence, it should not be discarded; both can show the mechanics and force of impact. Surveillance cameras on Broadway, including those mounted on nearby businesses, buses, and residences, are typically overwritten within 24 to 72 hours. An attorney can send preservation requests to those businesses immediately.
The filing deadline. A wrongful death claim in California must be filed within two years of the date of death under California Code of Civil Procedure Sections 377.60 and 335.1. That deadline falls on or around October 9, 2028. California’s pure comparative fault rule does not bar recovery because both drivers were the cause of this crash, not the victim.
