South El Monte, CA (November 3, 2026) - At 4:17 a.m. on November 3, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies were called to South El Monte. A Tesla had crashed into a hydrant at the intersection of Santa Anita and Central avenues.

A deputy at the scene said the Tesla was in self-driving mode when it lost control and sheared the hydrant. The deputy said two people were in the vehicle and neither was hurt.

According to reports, responding fire units had trouble shutting off the water from the hydrant. The San Gabriel Valley Water Company has since shut it off, and authorities blocked off the area.

No further details about the crash have been released.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

Who Is Responsible When Self-Driving Mode Is Engaged in a California Crash

NHTSA states that no vehicle sold in the United States today is fully self-driving. It adds that every one requires the driver's full attention at all times.

That puts the vehicle's own data at the center of a crash like this one. Event data and system logs can show whether a driver-assist feature was active, what it detected, and whether the driver took control. Claims in these cases often turn on that record.

Neither occupant was reported hurt, but whiplash, concussion, and other injuries can surface days later. Anyone who rode in the car should still be checked by a doctor. Damage to the vehicle can also support a property damage claim.

  • First steps: Get evaluated within 72 hours even without pain. Photograph the car and the scene, and ask that the car not be repaired or sold until its data has been preserved.
  • Who may be liable: The driver is the first candidate. The manufacturer may also share responsibility if the evidence points to a defect or system failure, along with any other party whose conduct contributed.
  • Insurance: Report the crash to your own insurer, and decline a recorded statement to any other insurer.
  • Deadline: Under CCP 335.1, a personal injury claim from this November 3, 2026 crash must generally be filed by November 3, 2028. California's pure comparative fault rule lets a person who shares blame still recover, with damages reduced by their share.
