Simi Valley, CA (September 27, 2026) - A Ventura County firefighter suffered major injuries early Sunday after a driver blew through an emergency blockade and slammed into a fire engine on the 118 Freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash happened shortly after 2:30 a.m. near Tapo Canyon Road. CHP officers and firefighters were already on scene investigating an earlier crash involving a wrong-way driver when the second collision occurred.

CHP said emergency crews had set up a blockade at the location when the driver of a red Tesla drove through it, striking a Ventura County fire engine and a firefighter.

The firefighter was hospitalized. CHP described the injury as major but did not release further details on the firefighter's condition.

The Tesla driver was arrested. CHP said no foul play is suspected. No additional details were immediately available.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

A crash into an active emergency scene raises questions that go beyond the usual fender-bender.

  • Who may be liable: the driver who struck the blockade, and potentially the vehicle's owner if different from the driver
  • What investigators examine: the vehicle's speed and path leading up to impact, whether the blockade and warning lights were visible and properly placed, and any toxicology or distraction findings from the arrest
  • An arrest doesn't resolve a civil claim on its own. That process runs separately from the criminal case
  • A workers' compensation claim through the fire department doesn't rule out a separate injury claim against the driver who caused the crash

Under California law, personal injury claims must generally be filed within two years of the crash. For this incident, that deadline falls on September 27, 2028 (CCP 335.1).
