Sherman Oaks, CA (26 May, 2026) - A motorcyclist was killed and a sedan passenger was hospitalized in severe condition following a collision at a Sherman Oaks intersection early Tuesday morning, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
The motorcycle and sedan collided shortly after 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at Ventura Boulevard and Woodman Avenue, an LAPD spokesperson said. The unidentified motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the sedan was transported to a hospital in severe condition.
Aerial footage from AIR7 showed a white privacy canopy set up alongside the sedan, with the motorcycle overturned near the car's front right panel. Ventura Boulevard's eastbound lanes were closed at the scene. Woodman Avenue was shut down south of the intersection.
The cause of the collision is under investigation by the LAPD.
This is a developing story - additional details may be released as the investigation progresses.
Under California law, the family of someone killed in a traffic collision can bring a wrongful death claim under CCP § 377.60. That claim compensates surviving family members - typically a spouse, domestic partner, children, or parents - for the loss of financial support, household services, and the relationship itself: companionship, guidance, love, and moral support. A companion survival action under CCP § 377.30 can also recover for the motorcyclist's own pain and suffering, medical expenses, and lost earnings between the moment of impact and the moment of death.

For claims against private parties - the driver, their insurer - California law provides two years from the date of the crash under CCP § 335.1. For a collision on May 26, 2026, the outside deadline is May 26, 2028.
If a public entity may be responsible - the City of Los Angeles, Caltrans, or any other government body in connection with the roadway - a formal Government Claims Act notice must be filed within six months, placing that deadline on or about November 26, 2026. That shorter window is the one most easily missed and the one that permanently bars a government claim if not timely filed.

"Motorcycle crash investigations move fast, and so does the evidence. The cameras at a commercial intersection like Ventura and Woodman are already on an overwrite cycle. By the time most families finish dealing with the immediate aftermath - the hospital, the funeral, the insurance calls - the footage that would have told the full story is gone. The cases we win are the ones where someone called us in the first week."
