Santa Clarita, California (August 9, 2026) - A motorcyclist suffered major injuries in a crash with a minivan on Vasquez Canyon Road in Santa Clarita Sunday evening, and the minivan's driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash was reported around 7:43 p.m. south of Bouquet Canyon Road. CHP's Newhall office said officers arrived to find a white minivan and a gray motorcycle at the scene.

Officers contacted the minivan's driver, a 73-year-old Santa Clarita man, and observed signs of impairment. Following an investigation, he was arrested on suspicion of DUI causing injury.

The motorcyclist was taken to a hospital with major injuries. Additional information on the rider's condition was not immediately available, and CHP continues to investigate. This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

Motorcycle Accidents Involving Impaired Drivers in Santa Clarita, California

A DUI arrest at the scene establishes fault early, but it doesn't automatically resolve a civil claim.

  • Who may be liable: the minivan's driver, and potentially the driver's insurer
  • The civil claim moves on its own timeline, separate from the criminal DUI case, and doesn't wait on a conviction
  • What investigators and attorneys examine: CHP's DUI investigation report, blood alcohol test results, and the minivan driver's insurance coverage
  • California follows a pure comparative fault standard, though a confirmed DUI arrest makes apportioning fault to the motorcyclist far less likely
  • California generally allows two years from the date of the crash to file a personal injury claim (CCP § 335.1), putting the deadline at August 9, 2028
