San Diego, CA (November 5, 2026) - The San Diego Police Department (SDPD) is investigating a deadly crash at Grand Avenue and Mission Boulevard in Pacific Beach. The crash happened on the morning of November 5. One driver was pronounced dead at a hospital, according to SDPD.

SDPD closed the 700-800 block of Grand Avenue between Ocean Boulevard and Bayard Street. It also closed the 4300-4400 block of Mission Boulevard between Hornblend Street and Thomas Avenue. Police said the closures would stay in place for the next several hours and asked drivers to choose alternate routes.

Police have not said what led to the crash, and the cause has not been confirmed. The number of vehicles involved has not been released, and SDPD has not shared additional details.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

What Families Ask After a Fatal Crash in San Diego County

California generally gives a family two years from the date of death to file a wrongful death lawsuit (Code of Civil Procedure section 335.1). These are the questions families ask most.

Who can file a claim after a fatal crash?

Certain family members can bring a wrongful death claim (Code of Civil Procedure section 377.60). The estate's personal representative can bring a separate survival claim (section 377.30).

Can a family file before police say who caused the crash?

Yes, a civil claim does not depend on a police conclusion, though the SDPD investigation will supply key evidence about the drivers and vehicles. Depending on what investigators find, responsibility may rest with a driver, a vehicle owner, or both.

What if the person who died was partly at fault?

California's pure comparative fault rule reduces compensation by that person's share of fault. It does not bar the claim.

How long does the family have to file?

Two years from the date of death. Counting from the November 5, 2026 crash, that is November 5, 2028.

What should the family do first?

Ask SDPD for the report number, keep photos and records, and send insurer calls to one person or an attorney. Avoid giving a recorded statement to an insurer until you have legal advice.
