Rialto, CA (October 25, 2026) - The California Highway Patrol said two people were killed when a minivan struck the back of a semi-truck on the eastbound 210 Freeway in Rialto.

The call came in at 2:37 a.m. on October 25 for the eastbound span west of Riverside Avenue, according to the CHP. When units arrived, they found the van had gone underneath the back of the semi-truck.

Two passengers died at the scene, and no identities had been released. Paramedics took the driver of the van and another passenger to a hospital, and their conditions were not known.

Investigators said one of the two survivors was taken into custody for possible DUI. The CHP had not said what caused the crash.

A SigAlert was issued after the crash and lasted several hours.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

Your Rights After a Minivan and Semi-Truck Crash in San Bernardino County

NHTSA estimated that 1,311 people, 34 percent of California's 3,876 traffic deaths, died in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes in 2024. That measure reflects a driver's blood alcohol level, not the cause of any single crash.

  • First steps: Survivors should be examined by a doctor even if injuries seem minor. Families can ask the CHP for the crash report number and ask that the minivan not be released or salvaged yet.
  • Who may be liable: Liability depends on what investigators find. A hurt or killed passenger can claim against the minivan's driver and, if the evidence supports it, the semi-truck's driver or owner.
  • Insurance that may apply: The minivan driver's liability policy, any commercial policy on the semi-truck, and uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage on a passenger's policy.
  • Criminal case: A criminal case, if one is filed, is separate from a civil claim, and the civil claim does not depend on a conviction.
  • If fault is shared: California applies pure comparative fault. A person's share of fault reduces a recovery but never bars it.
  • Deadline: Families have two years from the date of death to file a wrongful death claim (Code of Civil Procedure 335.1). For a death on October 25, 2026, that is October 25, 2028. Injured survivors have two years from the crash, and Code of Civil Procedure 377.60 lists who may file for a death.
