Ontario, CA - Driver Critical After Six-Vehicle Chain-Reaction Crash on 10 Freeway

Ontario, California (September 7, 2026) - A driver was left in critical condition after a six-vehicle chain-reaction crash shut down the westbound 10 Freeway in Ontario overnight. The California Highway Patrol said the crash was reported shortly before 2 a.m. near Etiwanda Avenue.

The collision appears to have started when a van and a car crashed, according to CHP, then escalated into a chain-reaction pileup involving as many as six vehicles. A pickup truck was left on its side.

The driver critically injured was taken to a hospital for treatment. CHP requested five evidence tows to remove the damaged vehicles from the freeway as part of the investigation.

Officers issued a traffic break at Cherry Avenue and closed the freeway at Etiwanda Avenue while crews worked the scene. All westbound lanes have since reopened.

Whether weather or speed contributed to the initial collision has not yet been determined.
