Norwalk, CA (September 1, 2026) - A 20-year-old driver was killed after a two-car collision set off a chain-reaction crash involving 16 vehicles on Rosecrans Avenue, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.

The crash happened around 12:52 a.m. on the morning of September 1, near Longworth Avenue, between Studebaker and Pioneer boulevards. Two vehicles traveling eastbound on Rosecrans collided, and both rolled over, according to the sheriff's department.

The chain reaction sent the vehicles into three more moving cars and 11 parked cars along the roadway. A third vehicle traveling behind the initial two also struck several of the parked cars, authorities said.

The driver killed was thrown from one of the vehicles that rolled, deputies said. LASD did not release his identity. Family and friends later identified him as Ivan Silverio Hernandez during a memorial at the scene.

Another driver was treated by paramedics at the scene but not taken to a hospital. LASD Capt. Omar Camacho told reporters speed may have been a factor but said investigators could not yet confirm that. A separate sheriff's official said the crash was believed to have possibly involved vehicles racing.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

Multi-Vehicle Accidents in Los Angeles County, California

When a chain-reaction crash involves this many vehicles, more than one driver's conduct can end up under review. Investigators will look at speed, following distance, and whether any vehicle was involved in racing before the initial collision.

  • See a doctor right away, even if injuries do not seem severe at first
  • Do not give a statement to any driver's insurance company before speaking with an attorney
  • Preserve dashcam footage, phone video, and photos from the scene if you have any
  • Do not accept a settlement offer until the cause of the crash is established

California follows a pure comparative fault rule, meaning more than one party can share responsibility, and any percentage of fault still allows for recovery. Personal injury and wrongful death claims in California must generally be filed within two years of the date of the crash (CCP 335.1; CCP 377.60). For this crash, that deadline is September 1, 2028.
