North Hollywood, CA (October 19, 2026) - A driver struck and killed a pedestrian near the intersection of Sherman Way and Lankershim Boulevard in the San Fernando Valley shortly before 2:30 a.m. on October 19 and fled, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The victim's identity had not been released, and the pedestrian's body was found in the roadway, police said.

Investigators believe a vehicle traveling eastbound on Sherman Way hit the pedestrian just west of Lankershim. Accounts of the vehicle differ: one describes a white vehicle, and another a light-colored SUV, possibly a yellow Jeep Wrangler. No description of the driver has been provided.

The driver did not stop to help and continued eastbound on Sherman Way before turning north, police said. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics pronounced the victim dead at the scene. A standing reward of up to $50,000 is available through the city's Hit-and-Run Reward Program Trust Fund for information leading to the driver's identification, arrest, and conviction. Police asked anyone who witnessed the collision or has information about the driver or vehicle to contact the LAPD Valley Traffic Division, and anonymous tips can be submitted through Crime Stoppers.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

Your Rights After a Fatal Hit-and-Run in Los Angeles

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported 2,758 deaths in crashes involving hit-and-run drivers nationwide in 2024, and 1,749 of the 7,080 pedestrians killed that year died in hit-and-run crashes. A family does not have to wait for an arrest to understand its options.

  • First steps: Ask the investigating LAPD unit for the report number, keep funeral and medical expense records, and avoid public posts about the crash. Do not give an insurer a recorded statement about the loss before getting advice.
  • Evidence: Businesses, buses, and homes near the intersection may have cameras, and footage can be overwritten quickly. If the vehicle is located, ask that it not be released or salvaged until it is examined.
  • Who may be liable: The driver once identified and, in some cases, the vehicle's owner, such as when the car was lent out or used for work.
  • Insurance that may apply: Uninsured motorist coverage can respond even when the driver is never found, and a police report is generally part of that claim.
  • Family claims: A wrongful death claim covers the family's losses, such as lost income, funeral costs, and companionship, and a separate survival claim covers what the person could have claimed had they lived.
  • Deadline: California allows two years from the date of death to file a wrongful death claim (CCP 335.1), which puts the deadline at October 19, 2028.
