Moreno Valley, CA (October 25, 2026) - Two California Highway Patrol officers were injured when a disabled car exploded on the northbound 215 Freeway.

The explosion happened on the afternoon of October 25, according to the CHP. The incident began shortly after 3 p.m., when a 2007 Toyota Camry broke down in the lanes just south of the 60 Freeway. The driver and a friend pushed the car onto the right shoulder around the time two CHP units arrived.

The car caught fire and exploded while the officers were near it, the CHP said. Video recorded at the scene shows a fireball engulfing the officers as they ran from the car.

Both officers sustained minor to moderate injuries and were taken to a hospital. The CHP expects both to make a full recovery. The driver and his friend were not hurt.

The driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI, according to the CHP. Riverside County Fire Department crews arrived within a few minutes and put out the fire, which did not spread to nearby vegetation.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

Next Steps After a Suspected DUI Vehicle Fire or Explosion in Moreno Valley, CA

NHTSA reported that 1,311 people died in California crashes involving an alcohol-impaired driver in 2024. NHTSA defines that as a driver with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 or higher. A DUI arrest is an allegation, and a civil claim runs separately from any criminal case.

  1. Get evaluated the same day. Injuries from a fire or blast, including burns, smoke inhalation, and hearing damage, can worsen or surface later.
  2. Preserve what disappears first. Save video and photographs, ask the CHP for the report number, and ask that the vehicle not be released or salvaged.
  3. Identify every source of coverage. The driver's liability policy, the vehicle owner's policy, and your own uninsured motorist coverage may apply. Decline a recorded statement to any insurer until you have advice.
  4. Consider other parties. If a repair shop or manufacturer played a part in the fire, they may be added once the cause is known.
  5. Watch the deadline. Personal injury claims must generally be filed within two years of the incident (CCP 335.1), which makes the deadline October 25, 2028. California's pure comparative fault rule allows recovery even when fault is shared.
