Montclair, CA (October 24, 2026) - A driver struck a group of about 30 bicyclists on a Halloween ride in Montclair, killing two riders, according to the Montclair Police Department.
The crash was reported at about 10:39 p.m. on October 24 at the intersection of Kingsley Street and Tudor Avenue, south of the 10 Freeway. According to investigators, the riders were traveling eastbound on Kingsley Street when a westbound 2021 Honda Accord struck several of them.
One bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, and a second rider later died from injuries. Two other riders were hurt, one with major injuries who is in stable condition and one with minor injuries who declined treatment.
Police said the driver fled and dragged one bicyclist about a mile before stopping and leaving the vehicle near Amherst Avenue and Flora Street. Officers found the driver at a home near the scene, and police arrested a 38-year-old Montclair man at about 2:40 a.m. on October 25.
He was arrested on suspicion of DUI causing injury or death, felony hit-and-run involving death, and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, police said. The identities of the riders who died have not been released.
This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.
NHTSA reported that 1,316 people outside vehicles, including pedestrians and bicyclists, died in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes nationwide in 2024. A criminal case and a civil claim are separate.
Prosecutors decide whether to file charges. Injured riders and the families of the two who died can pursue civil claims that do not depend on a conviction.
