Mission Viejo, CA (November 4, 2026) - Just before noon on November 4, an electric vehicle crashed into a nail salon in the 24000 block of Alicia Parkway. The crash sparked a large fire at the strip mall, according to the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA). OCFA said the driver was taken to a hospital.

An off-duty OCFA fire captain, Chris Chang, witnessed the crash and rushed to rescue the driver and clear the building. Chang said bystanders with fire extinguishers knocked down some of the initial flames and helped pull the driver out of the vehicle. Because he was off duty, Chang did not have protective gear or oxygen.

Firefighters who were responding to a different call nearby then rushed to the scene. They knocked down the fire before it could spread to the rest of the strip mall.

Information on the driver's condition and on what caused the crash has not been released.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

Your Rights After a Crash Into a Business in Orange County

California gives three years to file a property damage claim (Code of Civil Procedure section 338). Injury claims get two years (section 335.1). When a vehicle crashes into a business, both kinds of claim can arise at once.

  • First steps: Anyone who was in the salon or the strip mall and breathed smoke or felt unwell should be checked, even without pain. Photograph the damage before cleanup, and ask the responding agencies for the incident report number. Keep records of repairs, lost income, and medical visits.
  • Who may be responsible: The driver, and the vehicle's owner if that is someone else. Investigators typically look at the driver's actions, the vehicle's data, and where the fire started. If a defect is found, the manufacturer may share responsibility.
  • If fault is shared: California follows pure comparative fault, so a person who is partly at fault can still recover, reduced by their share.
  • Insurance that may apply: The driver's liability coverage, a business's own property and business interruption coverage, and health or medical payments coverage for injuries.
  • Deadline: Counting from November 4, 2026, an injury claim must generally be filed by November 4, 2028. A property damage claim must be filed by November 4, 2029.
