Malibu, CA (October 11, 2026) - A motorcyclist suffered major traumatic injuries in a crash that interrupted a rescue training exercise, according to a weekend update from Malibu Volunteers on Patrol.

Malibu Search and Rescue crews were taking part in a prescheduled joint training exercise with the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The exercise focused on responding to vehicles that go over the side of a road. The crash happened approximately 100 yards from where the crews were holding their debrief.

Rescuers from Malibu Search and Rescue and the fire department responded immediately. Crews treated the man and prepared him for transport, and a Los Angeles County Fire Department helicopter flew him to a local trauma center.

The update did not identify the rider or give a cause for the crash. It included no further information on his condition.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

After a Motorcycle Crash in Los Angeles County: What the Numbers Show and What to Do

UC Berkeley's SafeTREC, working with the California Office of Traffic Safety, reported that 522 motorcyclists died in California crashes in 2024. Los Angeles County led every county with 89 motorcyclist deaths and 800 serious injuries.

A rider's evidence is easy to lose once the bike is towed or repaired. These steps protect it:

  • Keep the helmet, jacket and gloves exactly as they are. Don't clean or repair them.
  • Photograph the road surface, lane markings, signs and sight lines, along with any gravel, oil or debris.
  • Ask the agency that responded for the crash or incident report number.
  • Find out where the bike was taken, and ask that it not be repaired or sold until it has been inspected.
  • Keep every record and bill from the trauma center and follow-up care, plus proof of missed work.
  • Check your own policy for uninsured motorist and medical payments coverage before talking to any insurer.

What Riders and Families Ask After a Motorcycle Crash in Los Angeles County

Who can be held responsible after a motorcycle crash in California?

Any party whose negligence contributed. That can be another driver, a vehicle owner, an employer, a vehicle or parts maker, or a public agency responsible for a dangerous road condition.

Can I recover if the cause of the crash isn't known yet?

Possibly. Investigators look at the road surface, signs, lighting, mechanical failure and any vehicle that left the scene. A claim can begin before a final report exists.

What if I was partly at fault?

You can still recover. California applies pure comparative fault, so your damages are reduced by your share of fault, with no cutoff.

How long do I have to file a claim?

Two years from the crash. For a crash on October 11, 2026, that deadline is October 11, 2028.

What if the road itself played a part?

A claim against a city, county or state agency must be filed within six months. For an October 11, 2026 crash, that deadline is April 11, 2027. Complaint and maintenance records can show whether the agency knew of the problem.
