Los Angeles, CA (September 7, 2026) - One person was killed in a five-car crash on the northbound 405 Freeway in the Sepulveda Pass. The crash was reported just after 2:30 p.m. near Getty Center Drive, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

At least five vehicles were involved in the collision. One person, who has not yet been identified, was declared dead at the scene.

The Los Angeles Fire Department said one additional patient was evaluated for minor injuries. Northbound traffic was disrupted for hours as crews cleared debris from the roadway, and drivers were urged to seek alternate routes. All northbound lanes had reopened by 6:30 p.m.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

Multi-Vehicle Crash Claims on the 405 Freeway

A five-car pileup rarely has one simple explanation, and sorting out who did what takes real investigation. Steps that protect an injury or wrongful death claim:

  • Get a medical evaluation immediately, even for injuries that seem minor at first
  • Avoid recorded statements to any insurance company until an attorney has reviewed the case
  • Preserve dashcam video and photos from the scene before vehicles are towed and repaired
  • Hold off on signing any settlement paperwork until the full picture is known

With five vehicles involved and the cause still under investigation, more than one driver may share responsibility. California's pure comparative fault rule allows recovery even when a driver is partly at fault, reduced only by that driver's own percentage of blame. A wrongful death claim for the person killed generally must be filed within two years of the crash (CCP 377.60), by September 7, 2028. Any injury claim from this crash carries the same two-year deadline (CCP 335.1).
