Los Angeles, CA (November 1, 2026) - The California Highway Patrol is investigating a multiple-vehicle crash on the northbound Harbor (110) Freeway, south of Vernon Avenue, that killed 40-year-old Jorge Medina Gonzalez.

CHP received the report at about 2:45 p.m. on the afternoon of November 1. Medina Gonzalez was pronounced dead at the scene, and the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner released his identity the next day, November 2. No other injuries were reported.

Early reports indicated a pedestrian may have been involved in the crash. CHP said the role of the man who died, including whether he was a pedestrian, is part of its investigation. The number and types of vehicles involved have not been released.

A temporary Sigalert closed the second, third and fourth lanes of the freeway. The investigation is being handled by CHP's Central Los Angeles Area office.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

Key Legal Points After a Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash on the 110 Freeway

California recorded 4,061 traffic deaths in 2023, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety. A crash with several vehicles can involve several insurers and several accounts of what happened, so evidence gathered early matters.

  • First steps: Request the CHP collision report and the investigating office's contact. Ask that every vehicle be held rather than salvaged. Ask nearby businesses to save camera video, since recordings are overwritten quickly. Send insurer calls to one person or to an attorney.
  • Who may be liable: Any driver whose conduct contributed to the crash, and an employer if a vehicle was being used for work. No cause has been reported.
  • If fault is shared: California follows pure comparative fault. A family can still recover when the person who died is assigned part of the blame, with the award reduced by that share.
  • Insurance that may apply: The liability coverage of each driver involved. The family's own uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage may also apply when a driver lacks enough insurance.
  • Deadline: Certain family members can bring a wrongful death claim, and the estate can bring a survival claim. Wrongful death claims generally must be filed within two years of the date of death, which here is November 1, 2028 (CCP 335.1, 377.60).
