What Shooting Victims Should Know

In California, a civil claim can proceed independently of a criminal case. An arrest or conviction is not required to pursue compensation for injuries. Civil rights claims are generally subject to a two-year statute of limitations from the date of the injury (California Code of Civil Procedure § 335.1). Seeking legal guidance early helps preserve critical evidence and protects your rights within that window.

If you were injured in a shooting, consider taking the following steps:

  • Seek and document all medical treatment, including emergency and any follow-up care
  • Preserve any available evidence, photographs, or witness contact information
  • Avoid providing recorded statements to any insurance representative before consulting with an attorney
  • Contact a civil rights attorney as soon as possible to understand your rights under California law
