Llano, California (June 20, 2026) - One person was killed in a three-vehicle crash on State Route 138 at 165th Street East in Llano early Saturday morning, according to California Highway Patrol incident logs.

CHP received the initial report at approximately 4:43 a.m. Incident logs noted a white Nissan Sentra was involved in a collision with another vehicle. Scene photographs showed at least three vehicles had sustained major damage: a white Nissan sedan, a white pickup truck, and a third vehicle that appeared to be destroyed by fire.

CHP transferred the incident to fire officials after Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel arrived. By 5:01 a.m., CHP updated the incident from a traffic collision with unknown injuries to a fatality investigation. Investigators remained on scene for several hours while traffic was diverted from the area.

Both eastbound lanes of SR-138 and the westbound left-turn lane were shut down by 5:16 a.m. CHP requested Caltrans assistance for traffic control and roadway closures. The roadway reopened at approximately 9:32 a.m., after nearly five hours. The Los Angeles County Coroner's Office was notified.

Authorities have not released the identity of the person who was killed. The cause of the collision and the circumstances leading up to it remain under investigation.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

What to Do After a Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash in California

When a fatal crash is under active CHP investigation, many families hold off on any legal action. That's understandable. Waiting, though, can cost them evidence that no longer exists when they're ready to act.

Can the family file a civil claim before the investigation closes?

Yes. A wrongful death claim under California law runs independently of any criminal or administrative proceedings. You do not need to wait for CHP to assign fault, issue a formal report, or file charges before speaking with a wrongful death attorney. Waiting can allow vehicle data and footage to be purged.

What can a wrongful death claim in California cover?

California Code of Civil Procedure § 377.60 allows surviving spouses, children, and domestic partners to pursue economic and non-economic damages. These can include funeral and burial costs, the financial support the deceased would have provided, and loss of companionship.

Who may be responsible in a multi-vehicle crash involving fire?

Fault in a crash involving multiple vehicles and a fire is rarely a single-party question. Investigators typically examine each driver's speed, lane position, and vehicle condition, as well as the sequence of contact between vehicles and any road conditions that may have contributed. More than one party can be found liable. California follows a pure comparative fault standard, meaning a wrongful death claim can still proceed even if shared fault is found.

Steps that matter right now:

  • Preserve evidence before it disappears. Camera footage from the SR-138 corridor, vehicle event data, and fire investigation records are all time-sensitive. An attorney can send preservation letters while that material still exists.
  • Do not give statements to insurance adjusters without legal counsel. Adjusters from any insurer involved may contact you. A statement made before an attorney reviews your case can limit what your family recovers.
  • Know the deadline. Wrongful death claims in California must be filed within two years of the date of death (CCP § 377.60). This crash occurred on June 20, 2026. The filing deadline is June 20, 2028. Missing that date permanently closes the right to pursue a civil claim.
