Lancaster, CA (June 20, 2026) - Near Lancaster Boulevard and Sierra Highway, in an unincorporated area of Los Angeles County, a man was shot and killed following a confrontation with a Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy on the afternoon of June 20, 2026, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

A Lancaster Sheriff's Station deputy had been dispatched to the area in response to a report of a man brandishing two knives, the sheriff's department said. The suspect stabbed the deputy. A deputy-involved shooting followed.

The man was struck by gunfire, transported to a local hospital, and later pronounced dead. The injured deputy was also transported to a local hospital, the department said. Sheriff Robert G. Luna stated the deputy is expected to recover from non-life-threatening injuries.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau investigators responded to the scene at about 2 p.m.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

A death in a deputy-involved shooting leaves a family with questions the initial official account rarely answers in full. What options are available, and how long a family has to act on them, are things they deserve to understand now.

What Families Should Know After a Deputy-Involved Shooting in California

Should the family speak with the Sheriff's Department?

No. Family members should speak with an independent civil rights attorney before giving any recorded or written statement to LASD investigators, the district attorney's office, or any other agency connected to the shooting. Statements made in the days following an incident can directly affect a future civil rights claim.

Can the family pursue a civil claim while a criminal or internal review is pending?

Yes. A civil rights claim under 42 U.S.C. § 1983 runs entirely separately from any internal affairs review or DA investigation. The civil process does not pause while those proceedings continue, and waiting for them to conclude can put a family outside the filing window before they realize the deadline has passed.

What does a civil rights investigation examine?

It examines whether the use of lethal force was constitutionally justified under the Fourth Amendment. That analysis includes whether de-escalation was a realistic option, whether less-lethal force was available and considered, whether the deputy's actions before and during the shooting followed departmental policy, and whether the force applied was proportionate to the circumstances as they actually existed.

What deadlines apply?

Two deadlines govern this case. Under the California Government Claims Act, the family must file a formal tort claim against Los Angeles County within six months of the shooting. That deadline is December 20, 2026. Missing it permanently bars the family from pursuing a civil lawsuit against the county, regardless of the merits. A two-year statute of limitations also applies to civil rights claims (CCP § 335.1), but the six-month government claims deadline arrives first and cannot be extended.
