Hyde Park, California (July 10, 2026) - Two men died at the scene of a multi-vehicle crash in the Hyde Park neighborhood of South Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner identified the men as 32-year-old Sergio Hill and 35-year-old Alvaro Castillo Jr. Both died of blunt force injuries, according to the medical examiner.

The crash happened around 10:44 a.m. on the morning of July 10 in the 3300 block of West 78th Street. Police said the two men were riding in a Toyota Camry attempting to make a left turn from West 78th Street onto Crenshaw Boulevard. A black BMW SUV broadsided the vehicle, according to police. A third vehicle, a Chevy truck, was also involved in the collision.

A young girl riding in the Camry was critically injured and taken to a hospital. Family members identified her as the daughter of one of the men killed. A nearby business owner said he saw the BMW racing another vehicle in the moments before the crash. Investigators said the BMW driver's speed may have contributed to the crash, though the Los Angeles Police Department said drugs and alcohol are not suspected.

The driver of the BMW suffered minor injuries, according to police. Police have not released the names of either driver involved, and no arrests had been announced as of this report.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

Losing a father in an instant leaves behind more than grief. It leaves a family facing decisions about medical bills, lost income, and a case that moves forward whether they are ready or not.

What to Do After a Fatal Car Accident in California

Families who lose a loved one in a crash like this one face a specific set of legal questions.

Can a family pursue a claim before the police investigation closes?

Yes. A civil wrongful death claim moves separately from any police investigation or potential criminal case against another driver. Families don't have to wait for LAPD to finish its work before an attorney can start building a case.

What can a wrongful death claim recover?

Under California Code of Civil Procedure sections 377.60 and 377.61, surviving spouses, children, and other qualifying heirs can pursue compensation for lost financial support and funeral costs. They can also recover for the loss of a parent's companionship and guidance. A separate survival action under section 377.30 may allow a decedent's estate to recover for what the decedent endured before death.

Does the Camry's left turn affect the case?

Not automatically. California follows a pure comparative fault standard. A driver making a left turn can still recover damages if another driver bears the greater share of fault. Investigators have said the BMW driver's speed may have been a factor in the crash.

What is the filing deadline?

California's wrongful death statute of limitations is two years from the date of death under Code of Civil Procedure section 377.60. For this crash, that deadline falls on July 10, 2028.
