Fontana, CA (October 10, 2026) - At around 2:07 a.m. on Saturday, a multi-vehicle crash involving a box truck on northbound I-15 near Summit Avenue sent at least two people to the hospital, the California Highway Patrol said.

The crash happened in the northbound lanes of the I-15 freeway just past the 210 connectors, near the Summit Avenue exit, according to the CHP. The vehicles reported to be involved were a silver Kia Telluride SUV, a box truck, a silver Tesla, and a fourth vehicle whose description was not released.

Firefighters from the Rancho Cucamonga Fire Department and the San Bernardino County Fire Department responded alongside CHP officers. Crews found two people inside the Telluride described as barely breathing, treated them at the scene, and transported both to a nearby hospital, according to fire officials. Their conditions were not immediately provided, and no information about any other occupants was released.

CHP officers ordered all northbound lanes closed at approximately 2:15 a.m. Two left lanes reopened around 3 a.m. and all lanes were cleared by 4 a.m. The cause of the collision remains under investigation by the CHP’s Rancho Cucamonga office.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

What to Do After a Truck Crash on the I-15 in Fontana

NHTSA’s Traffic Safety Facts for 2023 recorded 5,472 deaths in crashes involving large trucks nationally; 70 percent of those fatalities were not truck occupants but people in other vehicles or on foot. Commercial vehicle crashes on California freeways frequently involve multiple responsible parties beyond just the driver.

  1. Seek medical attention immediately. Injuries from high-speed multi-vehicle crashes, including internal bleeding, spinal trauma, and concussions, may not be obvious in the minutes after impact. Get a medical evaluation the same day, regardless of how you feel at the scene.
  2. Preserve the vehicles as evidence. Request that your vehicle not be released to a salvage yard before it can be photographed and inspected. If you were in the Telluride or another involved vehicle, the structure of that car and its airbag deployment data can all support your claim. Get the tow yard name and contact information before the vehicle is moved.
  3. Document the box truck before it leaves. If you can do so safely, note the carrier name, company logo, and USDOT number on the cab door. Record the trailer number and license plate. Commercial trucking companies are required to maintain driver qualification files, hours-of-service logs, and vehicle inspection records under federal FMCSA regulations, and those records are subject to discovery in a civil case.
  4. Report to your insurer; do not give statements to the truck company’s. Notify your own insurance carrier of the crash. Commercial trucks carry their own coverage, with the motor carrier, and potentially a maintenance contractor, sharing potential liability. Do not give a recorded statement to the truck company or its insurer without first consulting an attorney.
  5. Know the deadline. Personal injury claims must be filed within two years of the crash under California Code of Civil Procedure Section 335.1. That deadline falls on or around October 10, 2028. California follows pure comparative fault, so you can still recover even if you were partly at fault. If someone in your vehicle did not survive this crash, a wrongful death claim must also be filed within two years of the date of death under CCP Section 377.60, within the same window.
