Downtown Los Angeles, CA (October 7, 2026) - A five-car pileup left several vehicles damaged and five patients being assessed for injuries at a busy downtown Los Angeles intersection Wednesday morning, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The crash was reported shortly after 10 a.m. at Main Street and East Washington Boulevard, an LAFD spokesperson said. Five vehicles became involved in the collision, including a pickup truck that came to rest on the Metro train tracks that run along East Washington Boulevard. Images from the scene show an SUV with significant damage among the vehicles involved.

Five patients were being evaluated for injuries at the scene, the LAFD said. It was not immediately clear how many were transported to hospitals or the extent of their injuries.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

Key Legal Points After a Multi-Vehicle Crash in Downtown Los Angeles

California Vehicle Code § 22350 requires every driver to travel at a speed that is reasonable and prudent under the conditions present, regardless of the posted limit. In a multi-vehicle crash, that standard applies to each driver involved. Determining who failed to meet it — and to what degree — is what shapes how liability is divided.

Under California's pure comparative fault rule, more than one driver can share responsibility for a crash. Each party's share of fault reduces, but does not eliminate, their exposure to a claim. Anyone who was hurt in this crash may have a legal right to recover, even if the investigation later shows they also played some role.

  • First steps: Seek a medical evaluation within 72 hours even without obvious pain — whiplash, concussion, and soft-tissue injuries frequently surface days after a crash. Photograph all vehicle damage before repairs. Get the tow yard's name and address. Keep a record of every medical bill and missed day of work.
  • Who may be liable: The driver, or drivers, whose actions contributed to the collision; potentially the employer of any commercial vehicle driver involved; possibly the owner of a vehicle driven by someone else under CVC §§ 17150–17151.
  • If fault is shared: California follows pure comparative fault — any percentage of fault assigned to the plaintiff reduces the recovery by that percentage, but does not cut it off.
  • Deadline: Under CCP § 335.1, the filing deadline for any personal injury claim arising from this crash is October 7, 2028. That window runs from the date of the crash, not from the end of any investigation.
