Commerce, CA (October 8, 2026) - A civilian driver is dead after a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputy responding to an emergency call set off a chain-reaction crash in the City of Commerce during the early hours of Thursday morning, according to the sheriff's department.

The deputy was en route to Cudahy to answer a report of an unconscious person in the road when their patrol vehicle struck a car at S. Atlantic Boulevard and Sheila Street at around 1:30 a.m., the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said. The force of the collision pushed the civilian's car into a third vehicle.

The civilian driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The deputy sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital. The driver of the third vehicle was not hurt, investigators said.

The sheriff's department confirmed the deputy's lights and sirens were activated at the time of the crash. Video from the scene shows the patrol vehicle with heavy front-end damage.

No name has been released for the civilian who was killed. The investigation into the crash remains ongoing, and no additional details were immediately available.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

When a Government Vehicle Causes a Fatal Crash in California

California Vehicle Code § 17001 holds a public entity liable for injury or death caused by the negligent or wrongful act of its employee acting within the scope of their employment. A deputy driving to an emergency call does not operate above the rules of the road. Vehicle Code § 21055 permits emergency vehicles to proceed through red lights and exceed speed limits, but only with due regard for the safety of others — and that duty does not disappear because lights and sirens are on.

For the family of the driver who was killed, the most urgent step is not the lawsuit itself. It is the notice deadline. Under the California Government Claims Act (Government Code § 911.2), a formal tort claim against Los Angeles County must be filed within six months of the date of the crash. That deadline is April 8, 2027. Missing it permanently bars the right to bring any civil lawsuit, no matter how strong the case.

  • First steps: Do not sign any release from the county, the sheriff's department, or their insurer. Request the crash report from the investigating agency. Preserve all medical records and financial documents. Route every insurance call through an attorney.
  • Who may be liable: Los Angeles County, through the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, under CVC § 17001. Additional parties may become relevant as the investigation concludes.
  • Deadline: The government notice deadline of April 8, 2027 arrives before the two-year wrongful death filing deadline of October 8, 2028 (CCP § 377.60). The notice deadline controls and cannot be recovered from if missed.

After a death, California law allows the family to pursue a wrongful death claim covering lost financial support, companionship, and related losses, as well as a survival action for the victim's own losses before death. California's pure comparative fault rule means recovery is possible even where multiple factors contributed to the crash.
