Boyle Heights, CA - Passenger Killed After Car Launches Off 5 Freeway, Driver Held on Suspected DUI

Boyle Heights, California (September 17, 2026) - A passenger died early Thursday morning after the car they were riding in left the 5 Freeway and landed beneath an overpass, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash was reported around 2:15 a.m. on the transition road from the northbound 5 Freeway to the eastbound 10 Freeway, according to CHP's traffic incident log. The vehicle came to rest wedged beneath the overpass after leaving the roadway.

Reporting from the scene showed the car had come down directly under the overpass structure. CHP pronounced the passenger dead at the scene. No information about the victim's identity has been released.
